In Juathuur:
Gatecrash, the Oracle describes a "Strings and Stitches"
magic system that attempts to explain the difference between the various levels
of power that exist in the universe such as those of the Juathuur, demigods,
and gods. In this system, the powers one has access to depends on how many
"stitches" an individual has.
1 stitch - the singular connection to space/time that every
lifeform has. All 'normal' humans are monostitched. The string
attached to this central stitch is called the heartstring and
is the basis for identity but confers no additional powers.
2 stitches - All Juathuur are
twice-stitched or twitched. This means they
have an additional invisible connection to space/time that allows them to
produce and shift energy by pulling on their strings. The longer the string,
the greater the power. Source Twitches are the second most common level of
power and nearly all of them can be traced to experiments on humans by the god
Merlu.
3 stitches - demigods (the product of a human and a god)
are tri-stitched or tritched. This third
stitch allows them to bypass some of the limits that the Juathuur call "Gates"
and vibrate two strings simultaneously.
4 stitches - Gods are quad-stitched or
quatched. They can vibrate 3 strings simultaneously and are
not bound by limits. Gods are unique, however, in that their heartstrings
extend back to the beginning of the universe when they were 'awakened' and
therefore the oldest gods are the most powerful because their strings are
longer.
Some individuals have had their strings cut or corrupted and these
consititute special categories. For example, the Oracle is a
tripp, a 3-1, meaning she was originally a tritch but had one
of her stitches corrupted. In her case, the corrupted stitch was her
heartstitch. This resulted in complete memory loss prior to the incident and
various other effects, but she retained the use of her external stitches and
much of her powers.
